Stepping out of my house into the early morning, the sun’s glow outlined the eastern horizon with a paper-thin line of light, sharp as the knife blade on my belt. I stopped just outside the yard by my truck and looked out across the 87,000 acres of North American high prairie where I had just moved with my young family. I couldn’t see anything really, but the silent darkness of the prairie was dense like water, foretelling of what I could only imagine was coming into my life.
