Down Sea Charters: The Bahamas, Florida’s Next-Door Neighbor

The Bahamas is an amazing archipelago within proximity to the Florida coast. Formerly a British colony, it is a tropical wonderland consisting of 700 islands and 2,400 cays of gin clear waters to throw a cast into. If variety is the spice of life, this photo can serve as reminder to our local contented anglers reminding that a richly rewarding change of pace is nearby and worth the trip.

The Bahamas is a natural playground for those who love the sea and sand. There are many activities to do, but one of my favorites is to fish for bonefish in the flats. The Bahamas is synonymous with bonefish; it ranks among one of the top bone fishing destinations in the entire world. It is not at all unusual to walk a flat and encounter hundreds of bonefish schooled up in inches of water, with no one else in sight. The sheer size of the Bahamas can be overwhelming and the opportunity to target bonefish is virtually endless. Fly fishing for bonefish in the Bahamas is entirely unmatched, especially when it comes to accessibility and value.

Pick your destination. People typically travel to Acklins Island, Andros, Crooked Island, Grand Bahama, or Long Island, with the Abacos being a particular local family-favorite choice. If you are a new potential enthusiast, be certain to engage the service of a professional guide, someone familiar with the regions many fishing haunts.

The Bahamas is known to be the fly-fishing mecca for decades and for a good reason. Thousands of bonefish call these flats home. Its tropical climate, fun-loving people, and laid-back pace continues to draw traveling anglers from around the globe. Fly fishing for bonefish exemplifies sustainable, environmentally respectful angling at its best and is the most rewarding.
